The literary work of Roberto Quaglia

In Italiano, per favore!

In thirteen years of subliminal literary activity, Roberto Quaglia (which coincidentally happens to be me, myself) has amassed a substantial body of fiction. Most of this includes: science fiction, surrealistic fiction, plays, screenplays, humour and some essays. They amount to over one million words, almost all Italian ones, even if many have managed to transmute into Romanian, Russian, English and other languages.

However, you will not get here any of them, with that ridiculous exception consisting of these few diligent web pages that are apparently currently invading your monitor, usurping your attention and influencing your
psyche...

Summer 2006: Italian bookstores start to sell "Il Mito dell'11 Settembre e l'opzione Dottor Stranamore"

September 2007: The second revised edition of the book is published

The second edition (2007)

The first edition (2006)

It's notoriously cool to say that fact is stranger than fiction, but hardly anybody really believes this. This itself is bad because that is the way things definitely are! And so, how can someone go on limiting themselves to writing science fiction or fantasy when suddenly reality reveals itself as being weirder than any SF extrapolation or interpretation? Therefore, begging your pardon, I have now written a book that focuses on one such aspect of this vulgar world of reality. However I promise I won't do it again... for in the long term the weirdest reality ends up becoming boring.
Nonetheless, if such insights intrigue you, I can guarantee that this book's 500 pages may well eventually irritate you, disturb you, and even shock you. What it will not do is bore you. Not one bit...

An ESKMO antology as a tribute to Robert Sheckley

March 2007. Leading publisher ESKMO releases "Sheckley Academy " («Академия Шекли»), a SF antology in the memory of Robert Sheckley. The 640 big book contains exclusively Russian authors with two exceptions only: Ian Watson and Roberto Quaglia, who have both a story included. «Вечно что-то не так» by Roberto Quaglia and «Гиперзоо» by Ian Watson. On Russian only.

"The grave of my beloved", a story by Ian Watson & Roberto Quaglia, gets translated into Italian with the title "Una tomba per la mia amata", and is published on the science fiction magazine Robot.

Incredible, but true: I have been translated into Italian! It may look like a joke, since supposedly I AM Italian. But that's no joke. "The grave of my beloved" a story written on English in collaboration with British writer Ian Watson, has been translated into Italian by Francesco Lato for the Italian SF magazine Robot. Probably, I am one of the few Italian writers (if not the first at all) to have been translated into Italian....

October 2006:

Being published on cyrillic gives an original feeling, at least because you have to re-learn to read your own name: Роберто Квалья (even though a more correct spelling would be Роберто Куалья, but for Russians the first spelling is easier, so that's likely the way I'm getting known in Russia) - then you typically try a search on Google of your own name on cyrillics and with amazement you find out that there are more than 10,000 results...

"The grave of my beloved", a story of Ian Watson & Roberto Quaglia, is the closing story of the April 2003 issue of the prestigious American magazine Weird Tales, one of the first SF magazines ever

On the cover the name of Ian Watson appears, but not the one of Roberto Quaglia, although the story is of both authors. A choice which is commercially comprehensible but all the same not exactly elegant from the point of view of style.

"The penis of my beloved", a story by Ian Watson & Roberto Quaglia, is the closing story of the anthology Lust For Life, by Véhicule Press.

You still can't read Romanian? Hm, that's a pitty. "The Vagabond of Ether" it's a surreal and humouristic SF novel that I wrote in 1990. 130.000 words. This is the Romanian edition, of 1994, which at the time happened to be also quite a good bestseller.

God is incredibly different from what anyone would normally think. And it's not a nice surprise. How's God, then. And which are his bad sides? What happens if an alien intrudes himself (herself? itself?) into your house, pretending to have sex with you?

And now here you get even an entire online book for free! More than 100.000 words with justa a few clicks. The only downside... it's all on Italian.

THE DESSERT:

What follows is a list of coherent lists of words put down by me. In a less tortuous way we could say the following stuff are articles of mine. In fact it's just written space, even if it's not clear how it can be a space. (Is there really "space" in Internet ? And if there is, where is it ?)

"Pensiero Stocastico" (Stochastic Thinking) is a continuosly growing collection of short articles of mine, which I write monthly for the Italian Cyberzine Delos. The theme? Reality and its surprizing surroundings. In fact, we could argue that only the surroundings of reality in reality exist... All pieces are on Italian. Not all Italians are in pieces. Yet.
